Crow’s Shadow is happy to welcome Brenda Mallory to our studio for the first two weeks of May. Mallory is our first Artist-in-Residence (AiR) of the year, and kicks off our 2016 printing program. She brought an array of interesting materials and dove straight into wonderful textural explorations in the print studio. We are looking forward to the upcoming prints!
Mallory (Cherokee Nation) is primarily known as a sculpture and installation artist, mining natural materials and mimicking organic processes with her generative installations. Texture and repeated rhythmic forms are instrumental to Mallory’s abstract compositions. A long-time Portland resident, Mallory’s artwork has recently begun to garner more national attention, particularly as a recipient of a prestigious 2015 Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellowship in Indianapolis. There is also great video by Oregon Art Beat about her work & process here, Art Beat: Brenda Mallory. Mallory has attended multiple residencies, including a 2013 Residency in Sculpture at Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Colorado, and a 2015 GLEAN Residency in Portland Oregon; she is represented in Portland by Butters Gallery. Mallory’s 2016 Golden Spot Residency is her first time working at Crow’s Shadow.
Please join us at Crow’s Shadow for Brenda Mallory’s Artist Reception on Thursday May 12, 5:00-7:00 pm. The event is free & open to the public.
