Traditional Arts Workshops: September - December 2023

Recognizing art as an intrinsic and essential element of Native American culture, Crow's Shadow is committed to helping people, of all ages and experiences, develop their artistic skills. Traditional art workshops have been a vital element of Crow’s Shadow’s identity since its founding. Classes are taught by CTUIR members and other regional artists who want to share their knowledge of traditional techniques. Workshops are generally offered over a two-day period and supplies are included with registration fees.

  

Topic: Baby Moccasins

Date: September 2-3

Instructor: Ella Mae Looney


During this 2-day workshop, participants will create baby moccasins by cutting patterns out on buckskin hides, beading small designs, sewing together and adding final touches and ties. Supplies will include buckskin hides, size 11 beads, sinew, nylon thread, glovers & beading needles, scissors and pliers.

 

Instructor Bio: Ella Mae Loony is a Yakama tribal member, located on the CTUIR Reservation. Ella Mae beads, writes poetry, paints, and dances culturally. Her artforms are all tied to her culture, and tell stories that derive from her life experiences. Floral and geometric designs can be seen throughout her pieces, as they come from the beadwork/artwork from her tribe’s style.


Topic: Wristlet Workshop

Date: September 30 - October 1

Instructor: Sequoia Conner


Create a Beaded Wristlet with Sequoia Conner! During this 2-day workshop, Sequoia will share step by step techniques to wrap a wristlet using assorted beads, paracord, thread, beeswax and needles.

 

Instructor Bio: Sequoia Conner is a San Carlos Apache tribal member. Sequoia has been beading for several years. She learned how to bead from various relatives. Her beading techniques include flat stitch/applique, rope/wrap stitch, and loom beadwork. She creates various beadwork from accessories to traditional attire. She beads both for commission, and to add pieces for her family collection.

 

Topic: Flat Basket Weaving

Date: October 6-8

Instructor: Michael Ray Johnson

During this 3-day workshop Michael Ray will share how to start, design and complete a flat basket. participants will use twine, yard and/or corn husk, as well as scissors and embroidery needles. All supplies will be provided.

 

Instructor Bio: Michael Johnson was born and raised in Umatilla County. He is a weaver by trade, participating in numerous cultural exchanges, and has taught weaving classes at institutions including Blue Mountain Community College and Eastern Oregon University. His work has also been featured at the Oregon Tribal Celebration and Columbia River Tribal Fish Commission among others. He originally learned cornhusk twining when attending culture camp on the Warm Springs Reservation. Encouraged to continue weaving by his aunt, he was later sent to Idaho to study with several master weavers. Like his grandmother, Michael actively works to pass this rich tradition to those willing to learn.

 

Topic: Beaded Earring Workshop

Date: November 4

Instructor: Peyton La Mere

 

During this one day workshop, Peyton will share techniques to create a pair of beaded earrings from start to finish. Supplies include an assortment of beads, thread, stabilizer, beeswax and earring hook/posts to create one of a kind earrings.

 

Instructor Bio: Peyton La Mere is a Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation tribal member. Peyton has been beading for several months. She began beading medicine bags, and earrings. She beads both for commission, and to add to her family’s collection.

 

TOPIC: BEADED ORNAMENT WORKSHOP

DATE: NOVEMBER 18-19

INSTRUCTOR: Aubry booth-spencer

 

During this 2-day workshop Aubry will share how to create a one of a kind ornament for the upcoming holiday season using round glass ornaments, size 11 beads, thread, beading needles and wax. Supplies will be provided.

 

Instructor Bio: I am Aubry Booth-Spencer, part of the Umatilla tribe, and I own a nail salon and barber business in Pendleton called Beautiful Hand Creations. Being creative has always been one quality I have enjoyed throughout my life. Being in art classes, a nail tech for 8 years and showing my talents through my art keeps me motivated to keep creating. Working with my community and being able to show them my creative skills is something I really enjoy! I'm very bubbly and have shown it through my passions and life! I’m so glad to be a part of a community that embraces art and artists like myself.

 

Topic: Stirrup Covers 

Date: December 9-10

Instructor: Augustus Conner

 

During this 2-day workshop, Augustus will share techniques to create a pair of Beaded Stirrup Covers for horse regalia. Participants will have use of patterns and materials including wool, assorted beads, brass studs, buttons, stabilizer, thread, beeswax, needles and buckskin.

 

Instructor Bio: Augustus is an enrolled member of the CTUIR.  He learned to bead from many aunties and cousins throughout his life..  Lazy stitch beadwork is what he mainly uses.  He has added his work to family collections as well as others.
