Please join Crow’s Shadow in welcoming Charlene Liu to the gallery. Liu’s exhibit, entitled “Somewhere” is part of Disjecta’s Portland 2016 Biennial events. Curated by Michelle Grabner, the entire biennial is taking place in 15 different venues across the state of Oregon, from July 11th through September 16th.
Liu’s work combines digital and analog processes, such as using lasers to cut wood blocks for printmaking. Liu often begins her prints with drawings which she scans and isolates on her computer, programs for the laser and finally hand prints—moving full circle through several iterations of digital and analog rendering. Motifs in her work are culled from personal histories, juxtaposing decorative patterns from childhood recollections of her parent’s Chinese restaurant with pop-culture color palettes. The resulting works are graphic and vivid with oblique references to Liu’s personal histories
