Crow’s Shadow and the CTUIR Tribal Senior Center Program are seeking a handful of student volunteers for a two-day community project, Aug. 12 and 13.
The project will include elders from the senior center program working alongside high school youth to create original holiday greeting cards, using simple printmaking techniques at the Crow’s Shadow studio. The class size will be small, comprising about five elders and five students, allowing each student to collaborate and interact with an elder.
The first day will include a morning orientation period. Master Printer Frank Janzen will give a rundown of Crow’s Shadow Press protocol and demonstrate the materials and equipment (paper, inks, press, etc.) students will be using with the elders. The rest of the time will consist of students assisting the elders in the studio.
Elders will be shown a variety of ways to create custom-made greeting cards that they can use for any holiday or occasion that they wish. The printing process allows participants to make a small “edition” of cards with their own design, colors and greeting.
Crow’s Shadow will provide studio space, materials, instruction and lunch for both days. Transportation will be provided by the Senior Center. However, Crow’s Shadow can help with some transportation with youth or seniors, if needed.
Interested youth from Nixya’awii Community School, Athena-Weston, Pilot Rock and Pendleton are encouraged to call Feather Huesties, executive director, at 276-3954. For more information, please call the same number.
